Event: Hannover Messe 2024

Project Overview

Gravit8 was inspired by Brand Emotion’s brief to introduce an exciting new interactive tool: the Car Configurator Touch App, for their clients Fujitsu at Hannover Messe 2024.

The app allows users to design a car while considering the environmental impact of their choices. The interactive aims to highlight the significant environmental impact of car manufacturing. Each choice—from vehicle type and materials to manufacturing location—affects the car’s overall environmental footprint. By visualising these impacts in real time, the app educates users on sustainable manufacturing practices.

Here’s a look at how the app works, the user experience it offers, and its impact on sustainable car manufacturing.

Vehicle Shape and Concept

  • Selection Options: Users pick their favourite car model from choices like Sedan, SUV, Coupe, Station Wagon, and Minivan, each illustrated with a sleek image and a touch button.
  • Sustainability Graph: A dynamic graph and chart update instantly, showing the environmental impact of the chosen vehicle shape.

Body Material

  • Material Options: Options include Carbon Fibre, Steel, Aluminium, and Stainless Steel, each represented by an attractive image tile.
  • Sustainability Graph: The graph shifts to reflect the sustainability impact of the selected body material.

Engine Type

  • Engine Options: Users choose between Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, and Electric Vehicle (EV), each depicted with a clear image.
  • Sustainability Graph: The graph adjusts to show how each engine type affects the environment.

Tyre Selection

  • Tyre Options: Options are Eco Tyre, Performance Tyre (Low Profile Sports), All Season Tyre (Off Road), and Standard Tyre (Road Tyre), each visualised with a tread image or tile.
  • Sustainability Graph: The graph updates to show the impact of the tyre choice on sustainability

Manufacturing Location

  • Location Options: Users select a manufacturing location from Japan, Germany, Mexico, or Slovenia.
  • Finish Button: After making their choices, users hit the “Finish” button to proceed.

Evaluation Metrics

Environment:

The app encourages sustainable choices by providing instant feedback on the environmental impact of each configuration. Users learn about eco-friendly options, promoting a culture of sustainability.

Cost:

Users can see the cost implications of their selections, helping them make informed decisions that balance their preferences with budget constraints. This transparency aligns consumer choices with financial feasibility.

Impact and Sustainability Process

At Hannover Messe 2024, the app was a hit, serving as both a design tool and an educational platform. Users could see how their choices influenced sustainability, making the car design process interactive and enlightening. The diorama video content provided a captivating narrative on sustainability, further reinforcing the message.

The app blends fun with education, making car design a responsible and engaging experience. The positive reception at Hannover Messe 2024 demonstrated its potential to influence consumer behaviour towards more sustainable practices in the automotive sector. This initiative underscores Fujitsu’s commitment to environmental consciousness and promoting sustainable solutions in car manufacturing.
