Interactive Road Safety Solution

Background

At Gravit8, we thrive on developing interactive solutions that not only engage but also educate. Our collaboration with National Highways brought us the opportunity to create an app designed to be a powerful educational tool in the field, focusing on their “Road to Zero Harm” initiative. Unveiled at the Highways UK show, the app is now used to reinforce key road safety messages across various audiences.

The Challenge

National Highways sought an engaging and informative way to communicate the five critical areas of road safety: Safe Roads, Safe People, Safe Vehicles, Safe Speed, and Post-Crash Response. They needed an interactive experience that could captivate users and encourage them to reflect on how they, personally or professionally, could contribute to improving road safety.

What is Road to Zero Harm?

Road to Zero Harm is an ambitious road safety initiative championed by National Highways, aiming to ensure that no one is killed or seriously injured on the strategic road network. National Highways works with various partners, including emergency services and local authorities, to reduce collisions and create safer roads for all using the safe system approach.

What is the Safe System Approach?

The Safe System approach involves shared responsibility among those who design, build, maintain, and use roads, along with vehicle designers and post-crash care providers. It focuses on five key elements: Safe Roads, Safe Vehicles, Safe Speeds, Safe People, and Safe Post-Collision Response—ensuring that even if one part of the system fails, road users are still protected.

Solution: The Road to Zero Harm Puzzle App

We developed a visually engaging puzzle app that challenges users to place key images into the correct safety categories. By pulling and dropping images into their respective areas, participants work to complete a circular puzzle that represents National Highways’ “Road to Zero Harm” concept.

The puzzle pieces not only demonstrate the Safe System approach but also allow participants to identify how their organisations fit into this system. The interactive nature of the exercise prompts participants to think critically about their role in helping National Highways achieve its Road to Zero Harm goal.

Once all five sections of the puzzle are completed, the app animated the 5 key points before asking the user a thought-provoking question: “What can you do professionally or personally to help us to our Road to Zero Harm”. Participants who answer correctly receive a giveaway, encouraging engagement.

Results and Impact

The Road to Zero Harm puzzle app not only supported National Highways’ mission to promote road safety but also provided an innovative, interactive experience that captured the attention of many participants, including the Minister for the Future of Roads, Lillian Greenwood MP.

Its user-friendly design made it ideal for deployment in the field, ensuring the message of road safety reaches a broader audience while gathering valuable data to measure its success.

At Gravit8, we believe in creating experiences that make a lasting impact. The Road to Zero Harm puzzle app exemplifies how interactive technology can drive engagement and foster meaningful conversations around important societal issues.
