Game Changing Mixed Reality Solution
Project Overview
When bioMérieux wanted to showcase their WASPLab® solution at exhibitions without hauling the physical unit, they turned to Gravit8 for an innovative, high-tech solution. This game-changing solution combined Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) giving attendees a hands-on way to explore the WASPLab® system like never before.
The Challenge
How do you make a complex laboratory machine stand out at an exhibition? bioMérieux needed to present the WASPLab® Solutions functionality in an innovative and engaging way—without having to bring the machine itself. The goal? A solution that was easy to access, immersive, and flexible for different levels of interaction.
Gravit8 designed a two-part experience
Augmented Reality (AR) Web App – A quick and easy way for attendees to explore a 3D model of the WASPLab® system using their own devices.
Virtual Reality (VR) Interactive Laboratory – A fully immersive experience that let users interact with the WASPLab® in a virtual lab setting.
Augmented Reality (AR) Web App
- A simple QR code on the exhibition stand launched the Web AR app on any mobile device—no downloads needed.
- Users could view a detailed 3D model of the WASP®, WASPLab®, Colibrí™, and WASP-FLO™ machines.
- A printed marker on the stand ensured everyone saw the model from the same fixed position.
- Attendees could move around the digital model, zoom in, and explore details up close.
Virtual Reality (VR) Interactive Laboratory
For those wanting a deeper dive, we built a fully immersive VR experience using a headset, transporting users into a virtual laboratory to interact with the WASPLab® Solution firsthand.
Stage 1: Guided Experience
Users moved through five key areas in a step-by-step journey:
- Front of WASP®: Placing test tube racks on the conveyor belt and watching the WASP in action.
- Back of WASP®: A different angle to see how it all works.
- WASP-Lab®: Virtual doors opened to reveal the spinning test tube racks inside.
- Colibrií™: A closer look at this key component with supporting details.
- WASP-Flo™: Another static display with important insights.
Each area had floating screen or plinth-based info panels to explain key features.
Stage 2: Free Exploration Mode
Once users completed the guided tour, they could explore the lab freely, movement was controlled through physical motion and controller. We created physics based buttons that move users through the experience.
Switching between guided and free exploration was seamless with a simple controller button.

The Impact
The integration of AR and VR provided an innovative way for bioMérieux to engage delegates and showcase the WASP system. bioMérieux’s innovative approach allowed attendees to:
- See the WASPLab® Solution in real-world scale using VR.
- Get hands-on experience with the WASPLab®’s functionality in a virtual lab.
- Engage with the product in a way that was interactive, memorable, and fun.
